...an excellent display of modern dance that embraces the grace of classical forms, held by the firm brush-stroke of elegant composure. - SUNDAY HERALD SUN, AUSTRALIA

The big news concerns Shen Wei‘s reinvention of the dance vocabulary: the way the movement impetus flows from any point in his dancers’ bodies to any other, bypassing every convention of dance-as-steps or choreography as a predominantly vertical statement...Glorious.   - LOS ANGELES TIMES

About the Company

One of the premier international dance companies, Shen Wei Dance Arts has won worldwide acclaim for its interdisciplinary cross-cultural performances, which have been described as “breathtaking, powerful, and riveting” (The Boston Globe). Transcending East and West, Shen Wei Dance Arts fuses contemporary modern dance, calligraphic gesture, painting, and the ritual power of ancient drama to forge a startlingly new hybrid form of dance and movement-based spectacle. The company’s dances reflect the compositional rigor of Shen Wei as a visual artist, dancer and choreographer—incorporating vivid colors, striking design, and imaginative use of space into theatrical, kinetic paintings. Shen Wei and the company are further honored to be opening the 80th anniversary of the American Dance Festival, the Cannes Dance Festival, and the Festival Internacional de Artes Escenicas in Lima, Peru.

His recent work as a visual artist and choreographer/director has entered a new phase with a series of site-specific performances presented at museums and galleries including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art, Collezione Maramotti in Italy, Mana Contemporary and the Forum at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; with his new production of Sacre du Printemps with the Dutch National Ballet; and with his staging of Carmina Burana with Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Italy.

Shen Wei was named China Artist of the Year, 2012 at the Audi Arts and Design Awards held in Beijing on May 9, 2013.  The awards recognize Chinese contemporary arts and culture both in China and internationally, including visual art, design and performing arts.  Shen Wei performed a solo during the award ceremony, which was broadcast online in China and viewed by an audience of more than 300,000.

Collective Measures- A 40-minute repertory work, Collective Measures is Shen Wei's striking exploration of isolation amidst physical proximity. The dance probes our individual navigations in and out of sync with a crowded world. Rigorously structured, the dance transcends formality and takes the viewer into a rare, private space.
